Commercial editor that has a visual layout view as well as access to underlying code. It is really designed for web developers as a way to streamline design.There are three versions, including a version that aids in designing WordPress themes. BlueGriffon
BlueGriffon is a “freeium” HTML editor that has both visual and code layout modes. In it’s free form, it has a limited feature set that can be unlocked (through purchase) with additional features. However, it’s useful enough in its free form for basic web pages. If migrating from an earlier version (2.0) of BlueGriffon, be sure to delete your profile. Microsoft Expression Web
Nicely designed web editor with a visual layout mode. Hasn’t been updated in a while, but it is still useful for basic web editing.

Sparkle (Mac)
Simple to use visual layout based web editor. Has a free version limited to 3 pages, with branding.
Komodo Edit
A free cross platform editor for coding. It as HTML/CSS support for things such as tag completion which is very useful. Even more useful is a handy integrated HTML preview.

Aptana
Aptana is not really a Dreamweaver replacement. It leans more towards coding by hand than Dreamweaver’s split visual layout and coding model. Still, it has coding assist that helps. Requires additional pieces to be installed – Java and GIT.

Adobe Edge Animate (HTML 5 Web Animation)
Google Web Designer (Mac/Windows)
Free cross platform animation tool oriented for banner ads, image galleries and such. It shows some promise, but Adobe Edge Animate or Hype is much better.

Compares to Adobe Edge Animate in capabilities. Edu pricing is inexpensive. Mac only. There is a Professional version with more features for $49.99.
Acrobat Pro
Acrobat Pro 2017 is the last version of Acrobat Pro that can still be purchased outright, instead of being part of the Creative Cloud suite.
Preview
Preview is an application which comes with Mac OS X. PDF support is baked into Mac OS X, so PDF document creation is supported by many applications that run on the Mac. Preview can combine PDF’s, do simple editing and annotation, and in some cases can shrink the size of PDF’s.
Skim (Mac)
Skim is a free PDF reader/annotation application useful for taking notes in Acrobat files, for such things as study guides or research notes.

PDF X-Change Viewer
The company offers several versions of this Windows only tool. The free version can do simple PDF work such as annotations and signatures. They offer a “Lite” version for educational use for free, and their commercial versions are available at a 50% discount for educational customers.
